On the occasion of commemoration of Centenary of Restoration of the State of Lithuania, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, on his private initiative, wishes to give every household of Lithuania, which cannot afford to buy it, a present – a flag of the Republic of Lithuania.
"Fines cannot ensure that flags are raised on holidays. The national spirit is fostered in the heart, says the Prime Minister. Needless to say, I won't ask to show the tax return form. I will just ask, if people have the national flag, and if the answer is no, why don't they. Some people may try to take advantage of it, but, on the other hand, it will demonstrate people's respect to patriotism", he adds.
According to the Prime Minister, it is often that not only the needy do not possess a flag, and there are various reasons, as to why the people cannot hoist a flag. For example, the removal of bilingual street names in the southeastern part of Lithuania - Sudervė remains a sore point for several years. Here during a public holiday, the national flag is raised on infrequent occasions.
It is planned that the Flag initiative will be sponsored by private and donor funds. Social players and entrepreneurs are also invited to participate in this initiative.
